Diet plays a real role in whether you form another kidney stone. In general, that means drinking plenty of water, limiting sodium and animal protein, and being thoughtful about high-oxalate foods. Hydration is the single most important diet factor for stone prevention. The more diluted your urine is, the less likely minerals are to concentrate and crystallize. If you have had a stone before, aim for enough water that your urine runs consistently light in color throughout the day.
High-sodium foods increase the amount of calcium your kidneys excrete into urine, which raises stone risk. Animal protein in large amounts has a similar effect. Foods high in oxalate, like spinach, rhubarb, and many nuts, are worth moderating as well, particularly if you form calcium oxalate stones, which are the most common type.
Calcium-rich foods, eaten alongside oxalate-rich ones, actually help by binding oxalate in the gut before it reaches the kidneys, so cutting calcium entirely is usually the wrong move. Citrus fruits and citrus juice can also be helpful, since citrate is a natural inhibitor of stone formation.
Not all stones form the same way, and a diet that helps prevent one type can do little for another. Uric acid stones, for example, respond more to limiting high-purine foods than to oxalate restriction.
