Not every prostate cancer needs to be treated right away. For men with low risk disease, active surveillance is a well established, guideline supported approach that monitors the cancer closely over time rather than proceeding to immediate surgery or radiation.
At Urology Associates, approximately one quarter of our prostate cancer patients are managed with active surveillance. These men undergo regular PSA testing, periodic MRI imaging, and repeat biopsies as needed to ensure the cancer remains stable. If the cancer shows signs of progression, we transition to treatment while the window for cure remains wide open.
The advantage of active surveillance is that it avoids the potential side effects of surgery or radiation, including impacts on urinary, bowel, and sexual function, for men whose cancer may never pose a threat in their lifetime.
